Preview your fonts Online

If you often work with desktop publishing, graphic design, or even regular word processing, then you have no doubt found the need to examine your fonts in a quick minimalist view at some point or time. There are different ways of doing this in each operating system, but here's a quick way to achieve it from any computer using nothing but a web browser.

Flippingtypical.com is a web application that will compare your installed fonts live on your browser. Select the type under the font title on top, and type a phrase to preview how it would look using the fonts on your computer. Select the top font title, and change the actual font name for an instant preview on the main phrase. Or just click on a desired font for a different look. This is a great way to view your fonts side by side and make your day more productive.

Twitter for Research

We've all seen the pro's and con's of Twitter now. Sometimes it's difficult to even explain Twitter to someone new to it. Like most social media tools, if used correctly, it has a potential for massive harnessing of crowds and resources alike. I've been noticing the quick rise of information on Twitter alongside Google searching.

There is much to be discovered for both work and fun, but more importantly research and development. It's no secret, that the internet is possibly one of your most valuable resources for productivity in all facets of life, especially WORK and the growing amounts of mobile devices.

That being said, just as there are certain methods for better isolating your desired information on Google (see my Search Tips), there are also ways to narrow down desired information on Twitter. Constantly there are growing number of web based tools available for this. Here are two sites I have been using quite a bit lately for aggregating information.

Create Presentations Online

Prezi is a web based service that allows you to make animated zooming presentations online. The results can be viewed online or downloaded to view locally. Utilize images, videos, PDF's Flash files...etc. Like most cloud based services, there are Free public accounts, which are limited to 100 MB's of space, and a watermark on your presentations.

Pro and Private accounts unlock more features, remove the watermark and give you the ability to edit your presentations offline. It's not a replacement for Keynote or Powerpoint, but it's a nice solution for you to use if you need to create a presentation with nothing but a browser in front of you. Try the online editor, or flip through the showcase to see what is possible.

Evernote

"Evernote allows you to easily capture information in any environment using whatever device or platform you find most convenient, and makes this information accessible and searchable at any time, from anywhere."

Use plain text, images, clippings from the web, or attach pdf's. Evernote lets you tag every note giving it context or categories. You can then search your information very easily via keywords or tags including the contents of your pdf's. Additionally, Evernote does some OCR on the server side, allowing you to also search the text in the hand written notes you scan in.
