Evernote

"Evernote allows you to easily capture information in any environment using whatever device or platform you find most convenient, and makes this information accessible and searchable at any time, from anywhere."

Use plain text, images, clippings from the web, or attach pdf's. Evernote lets you tag every note giving it context or categories. You can then search your information very easily via keywords or tags including the contents of your pdf's. Additionally, Evernote does some OCR on the server side, allowing you to also search the text in the hand written notes you scan in.

There are basically 3 ways to have access to your Evernote data from anywhere:

  • Via your Web Browser
  • Via your Desktop Client Application
  • Via your Mobile device (iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile)

The web clipper addon in your browser(s) helps you grab content from the web, easily into your Evernote notebook(s). Along with your notes, a link to the page you’re grabbing from will be saved, allowing you to easily find the original source for future reference.

Desktop clients make it easy to save ideas, using Text and screenshots, as well as dragging images or file attachments with your notes. Clients of Evernote are available for Windows and OS X. Linux users have to use the web interface for now.

The mobile versions for the 3 major players: iPhone, Blackberry & Windows Mobile are all well executed. Snap a picture, jot a note, record audio, access to your ideas and notes all the time.

It's an excellent productivity tool for getting things done. I use it constantly, whether I'm storing information from the web for later access, using it as a central location for my passwords (yes evernote includes encryption as well), documenting technical documents, or just jotting down meeting notes.

Evernote is Free, as are the mobile versions. However there is a Premium paid version that gives you a larger file storage allowance (500mb per month vs 40 mb per month in Free version), attachments of any kind, SSL Encryption, and priority optical character recognition(OCR) on your notes. $5 per month or $45 for the year gets you the premium addons. Well worth it, if you outgrow the free offerings.
