Scanning for wireless networks also referred to as "stumbling", is basically the detection of Wireless LANs using the 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.11g WLAN standards. This is useful for verifying network configurations, locating poor coverage in a WLAN, finding causes of wireless interference, detecting unauthorized access points etc...
In Mac OSX I find these two tools the most useful:

The Untangle Gateway brings together a list of applications and functions that simplify a combination of daily administrative network tasks. Like most commercial open source products, you need to buy the Professional Package to get some of the higher end features.

http://checkip.dyndns.org/
http://myip.dk/
Use which ever is easiest for you.
You can also find it via the shell in Linux, and the Terminal in OSX.
Linux: wget -q -O - checkip.dyndns.org | sed -e 's/[^[:digit:]|.]//g'
OSX: curl www.whatismyip.org
