Get your White Balance Right

Getting the white balance correct in your photos isn't always simple. This is where I use the "baLens White Balance Lens Cap". A must have accessory for DSLR photographers, never leave home without it. Modern day digital cameras have built in AWB (Auto White Balance), which does a decent job if there is white, grey and black for the camera to calculate. However, slight changes in light will affect the color temperature on those source readings, resulting in post processing of the RAW files to correct the white balance.

So what if you could get the white balance correct in the camera? Obviously this saves you time in post processing, and you will get more accurate results from the moment you snap your pictures. This is where the baLens White Balance Lens Cap comes in. Usually photographers carry a grey card, to set a custom white balance setting in camera. Instead, the baLens Cap now replaces your standard lens cap, and doubles as a white balance tool.

With the baLens cap still on, set your camera to custom white balance in your menu. Aim the lens at your light source, and take a reference shot. If the white balance reading succeeded, remove your cap, and shoot true/vivid/accurate photos. That's it!

D90 Tests and First Impressions

I have been poking around in the amateur arena with my old Nikon D60 for quite some time now. Having felt like I have progressed to the next level, it was time for a new camera body that could inherit my existing lenses.

Enter Nikon's D90 which replaced the old D80 (a great camera in it's own right). The D90 improves on the D80, featuring a 12.9 Megapixel DX sensor, 3 inch Live-View LCD screen, IS0 200-3200 range (100-6400 in expanded), and Movie Capture at 1280x720 (720P) HD to name a few.

As a DSLR, it is a perfect choice for both amateurs and intermediates who want to start venturing into the Pro-sumer level of photography. There may very well be too many features for me to cover at this early stage. However, out of the box, with my existing collection of Nikon lenses, the results are stunning. Inclusion of Auto Exposure Bracketing, a feature missing from the lower models for shooting HDR images is welcomed. The camera feels sturdy and is slightly bigger than the D40 & D60 models, yet not as large as it's big cousin the D300.

iPhone wireless DSLR Remote for Nikons

A month ago I posted about a remote DSLR iPhone Appliaction for Canon cameras. Well, a few weeks later, the authors onOne Software have announced a 1.1 update coming soon.

Among several fixes, feature updates and a new user interface, the most interesting addition is support for Nikon DSLRs. The update is due out sometime mid-July.

Camera & Notebook Bags

I love my DSLR. I love my MacBook Pro. It's HARD to carry both and protect them at the same time. Heck, it's hard carrying one of them with all their accessories. If you have a passion for photography or mobile computing, which sometimes go hand in hand, then you may be fond of backpacks and shoulder slings like I am. Currently I use bags from Tamrac, and Naneu Pro. But I'm always on the lookout for a better combination of style and space.  So if you're in the market, check some of these out:

There are some good bags to be had there. In some cases even combo bags that carry both your camera equipment and notebook all in one. Now, if you're a rugged traveler, and want to have that ULTIMATE protection for your expensive camera equipment, take a look at Pelican Cases. They make some excellent watertight rugged cases.
